ABC Friends NewGen Initiative

The NewGen Initiative aims to ensure support for the ABC continues into the future, and that the importance of the ABC and public broadcasting is fully understood by the next generation of young people.

In 2020 ABC Friends Vic commissioned the ABC Youth Engagement Research Project, undertaken by Latrobe University post-graduate students. The results raise some concerns about continued support for the ABC in the future and present a challenge for ABC Friends to raise awareness of the ABC and the importance of public broadcasting.

The ABC Friends NewGen Initiative will develop a suite of activities and targeted programs over the coming years to strengthen the understanding of the important role that independent, publically funded broadcasting plays in a vibrant democracy.

We have already appointed a Youth Engagement and Social Media Officer.

We will soon be hosting a roundtable, where a group of young leaders and influencers from diverse backgrounds will be invited to discuss the issue and help us shape the NewGen Initiative to best reach our target audience, and grow ABC Friends and champions of the future.

We are excited and encouraged by the initial discussions we have had to date with some potential participants who will provide a fresh lens to the challenge before ABC Friends, to ensure that initiatives developed are relevant, scalable, and will have the greatest chance of success.

The Victorian Development Subcommittee  - Lin Bender, Bill Condon, Pamela Creed (Convenor), Colin Neave - have committed to deliver the NewGen Initiative on behalf of ABC Friends, and every bit of financial help will be very welcome.

Please support this intergenerational and ambitious Initiative
