Peta Murphy was a great local member for Dunkley, and a really fine person. She was also an avid supporter of the ABC (and many other good causes). ABC Friends needs to honour her memory by making the ABC front and centre in the campaign for the seat, and we need your help to do that.

The by-election will be held on Saturday 2 March which means that we only have three weeks in which to make our arguments and to influence the voters.

Four candidates are known already. The ALP has selected Jody Belyea, teacher and businesswoman, and the Liberals have selected Frankston mayor Nathan Conroy. Libertarian Chrysten Abraham and Independent Darren Bergwerf have also nominated and there may be others. It is a marginal seat and both major parties will campaign heavily. The campaign and the results will be heavily scrutinised.

This is where ABC Friends comes in. We have a very strong local group in the area, the Southern Bayside Group, and they are gearing up for a powerful campaign to make strengthening the ABC a campaign issue. As we did in the May 2022 federal election, we will be urging voters to "vote for the ABC" i.e. vote for candidates who are most likely to support and advocate for the ABC.

Our campaign themes will be that the ABC is trusted, valued, but still underfunded, and that democracy depends on a strong ABC. The campaign will involve posters, signage, leaflets, personal visits, banners, hand-outs, advocacy at meetings, and questioning candidates and reporting on their commitments.

We need your help.

Dunkley electorate profile

We need parliament, seat by seat, to be full of MPs who believe in public broadcasting and the ABC and we need to make sure that a strong ABC advocate represents Dunkley.
