Background
Chisholm is an eastern suburbs electorate which includes all or parts of Box Hill, Blackburn, Burwood, Ashwood, Chadstone Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley and Wheelers Hill.
It is classified as Inner Metropolitan (situated in capital cities and consisting of well-established built-up suburbs) and has the largest Chinese community of any Australian electorate.
Chisholm has a relatively even political geography, with both major parties polling between 40% and 60% of the two-party preferred vote in 35 of the 38 polling places in 2022. The two extremes were both at the southern edge of the electorate, Labor polling 67% in Clayton, and the Liberal Party 62.4% in Wheelers Hill.
Chisholm was Liberal held from 1949 until 1983, when it was won by Labor's Helen Mayer. She was then defeated by Dr Michael Wooldridge at the 1987 election. Labor's Anna Burke won Chisholm at the 1998 election and retained it at subsequent elections until retiring in 2016, when it returned to being a Liberal-held marginal seat.
