Background
Deakin stretches east-west along the Maroondah Highway and Canterbury Road in Melbourne's outer eastern suburbs. It includes all or parts of Blackburn, Forest Hill, Mitcham, Vermont, Ringwood, Heathmont, Croydon and Bayswater North.
It is rated an outer metropolitan electorate (situated in a capital city and containing large areas of recent suburban expansion).
The electorate has been won by the Liberal Party at all but three elections since its creation in 1937. Deakin was won by Labor for a single term in 1983 and in 2007. In 2010, Labor's Mike Symons became the first Labor MP ever re-elected before new electoral boundaries prior to the 2013 election made it a Liberal seat again.
Michael Sukkar was elected in 2013 and has either increased his majority or limited the swing back to Labor since. Prior to the 2022 election, he held the seat with a margin of 4.7%.
