Background
Dunkley includes all of Frankston and the surrounding suburbs of Langwarrin, Seaford, Carrum Downs, Sandhurst and Mount Eliza.
The outer metropolitan electorate takes in the area covered by the Frankston City Council and parts of the Kingston City Council and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.
Dunkley was first created when the national Parliament was expanded in 1984 and swung from the ALP in 1984 to the Liberals in 1990 and back to Labor in 1993 largely due to state issues. The seat again changed in 1996 when the Liberals Bruce Bilson was first elected. He held the seat until being defeated by the ALP’s Peta Murphy at her second attempt in 2019.
In late 2023, Peta Murphy died of breast cancer, triggering a by-election in March 2024. Jodie Belyea retained the seat for the Labor Party, winning 52.7% of the two-party preferred vote.
