Background
Kooyong is an affluent inner metropolitan electorate covering suburbs such as Hawthorn, Kew, Balwyn, Canterbury, Camberwell, Mont Albert, Surrey Hills and parts of Glen Iris. The electorate includes parts of the council areas of Boroondara, Stonnington and Yarra.
Kooyong has existed since Federation and has had seven members in 121 years, including former leaders Sir Robert Menzies (1934-66) and Andrew Peacock (1966-94). Former Liberal Deputy Leader and Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, held the seat from 2010 with a margin of more than 6%.
Until the 2022 election, all previous members for Kooyong had been conservative. Dr Ryan was part of what became known as the Teal wave of progressively minded independent candidates who were elected at the 2022 election.
Ryan is the first woman to hold the seat and the first candidate to unseat an incumbent in Kooyong since 1922.
