There are two seats in Victoria which are held by independents and which will attract enormous interest in the election campaign.

Both were won in 2022 by unseating the incumbent Liberal in a seat with a history of Liberal “royalty”. Both independents have been high profile and effective representatives, and both are being challenged by Liberals. If they are re-elected both independents are expected to play an influential role in the new parliament, particularly if there is a minority government.

The seat of Kooyong is held by Dr Monique Ryan with a margin of 2.5%. Previous members have included leading Liberals such as Menzies, Peacock, and Frydenberg and the Liberal candidate this election is a Hamer.

The seat of Goldstein is held by Zoe Daniel with a margin of 1.8%. Previous members have included prominent Liberals such as McPhee, Kemp, and Robb and the Liberal candidate this election is Tim Wilson, who held the seat before Daniel.

The result of the election in these two seats will say a lot about the fortunes of the Liberal Party. If they cannot win back either of these two seats it will be much harder for them to have enough seats to govern. The campaign is already intense in both seats, and there will be massive media attention.

ABC Friends is campaigning in both these seats, with the message that democracy depends on a fearless independent ABC . We are urging people to vote for candidates who support the ABC, and who agree with the six key components of our  ABC Friends Election Platform.
